Friday evening Glen sat on his neatly made bed browsing through Sport Magazine. On the wall of his precise, neat room was a tidy bulletin board covered with carefully cut out Prowler clippings and a poster of Rocket Richard. Well-dusted framed family photographs and books lined a wooden bookcase. Outside, a car horn honked loudly twice. Glen sprang up expectantly, looked out the curtained window, picked up his hockey jacket from his bed and hurried out of his room.

He trotted down the stairs and hurried through the well-appointed living room, where his folks and Duane’s parents were playing bridge on a card table. Mitch Miller was smiling through his beard on the television screen in the background.

Glen didn’t stop but said over his shoulder, “Duane’s here!”

His mother looked over her glasses as she arranged her cards, saying, “Where are you going, dear?”

Glen answered as he opened the door, “The hockey game in Grand Forks. The University of Minnesota is playing the University of North Dakota. We’re going to see Joey play.”

Glen’s father trumped a card, pulled his trick toward him, looked up at Glen, startled, and authoritatively said, “No! The weather’s going to be bad. I don’t want you driving sixty miles away.”

Duane’s dad eased Glen’s dad a bit, “Don’t worry, I’ve already told Duane he can’t go.”
